Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems such as those concerned with knowledge, values, reason and mind. Literally the word philosophy means the love of wisdom and so it is the in-depth scientific study of facts of the universe and it has three basic areas such as:
Epistemology
Epistemology, the philosophical study of the nature, origin, and limits of human knowledge. The term is derived from the Greek epistēmē (“knowledge”) and logos (“reason”), and accordingly the field is sometimes referred to as the theory of knowledge.
It is a branch of philosophy that considers the nature of knowledge and how we come to know. Here, knowing based on the senses and feelings, scientific inquiry, empiricism, intuition and reasoning (inductive, deductive). It tries to answer the questions like
- What we know?
- How we know?
- What is the difference between knowing and believing?
Ontology
Ontology, the philosophical study of being in general, or of what applies neutrally to everything that is real. It was derived from Latin term ontologia (“science of being”) and called “first philosophy” by Aristotle in Book IV of his Metaphysics.
This branch of philosophy considers the nature of reality and physical universe. The major areas of discussion in ontology are reality, existence of being and nature of human being etc. It tries to answer the questions like
- What is reality?
- What is being?
- What is existence?
Axiology
Axiology, (from Greek axios, “worthy”; logos, “science”), also called Theory of Values, the philosophical study of goodness, or value, in the widest sense of these terms.
It is branch of philosophy which deals with the nature of values, the types of values and the problems of values. It consider into account the study of ideologies and ethics. Sub-branches of axiology are:
- Ethics
- Aesthetics
Ethics
Ethics is concerned with the concept of right and wrong, good and wicked. It asks the questions like
- What is good?
- What is bad?
Aesthetics
It is concerned with the concept of beauty and enjoyment. Its asks the questions like
- What is beauty?
- What are the aspects of enjoyment?
